Flying high, hitting hard

May 2, 2006

By DAVE DEMAREST

The sun barely poked through the clouds Sunday, but that didn’t stop hundreds of children and parents from enjoying an eventful afternoon at Bailey Road Park in Cornelius.

The Cornelius Parks and Recreation Department hosted the free Pepsi Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Local Competition for area youth on one of the baseball fields.

One of the many players taking his cuts was 9-year-old Michael Hernandez of Statesville. Hernandez pitches and catches for the Montessori Mustangs through the Iredell County Recreation Department.

“It’s my favorite sport. It’s been my favorite sport since I was 2.” said Michael, whose baseball coach Bill Ward urged him to test his talents in the Cornelius competition. “He kind of inspired me.”

As dozens of boys and girls batted balls, the sky above was full of colorful kites floating in the breeze above their heads.

Parents and children of all ages celebrated National Kite Month at the fourth annual Kite Flying Event.

Chris Mueller and his 5-year-old son Cliff stretched their bright blue and red kite as high as it can go. Cliff said he likes flying his kite, “as long as it stays up.”
