Girl Scouts of all ages hopped, bounced and jumped the morning away for the Girl Scout Jump-A-Rama fundraiser.
More than 180 children attended the event, with handmade jumping ropes from kits the girls purchased.
“I thought this would be a fun district event and a way to earn patches,” said troop leader and event organizer Kris Van Riper.
The Turning Tigers, Davidson Elementary’s jump rope team, and leader Walter Raab came to the event and showed the girls “cool tricks,” said Neely Alt, the family campaign coordinator for Mecklenburg County for the Girl Scouts.
All of the proceeds from the jump rope kits will go toward the Hornet’s Nest.
“That’s another way to earn money, rather than grants or foundations,” Alt said. “We raise money for three specific causes: capital improvement, community outreach and financial aid.”
Outside of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, girls did double-dutch and sang rhymes while twirling their ropes under the fall sun. Inside, troop leaders swung ropes as the children waited for the right time before hopping in.
“It’s a good turnout, and I think everyone had a good time,” Alt said.
