Brittany has run track for Lake Norman High’s team for the past three seasons. As a sprinter, Brittany runs the 200 meter and 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter relays.
And when she tried the 300 meter hurdles for the first time this season, Brittany placed second overall and clocked in just shy of the school’s record time.
Her father and coach, Michael Watts, said he wishes she would have taken up the 300 meter hurdles earlier in her track career.
Michael serves as the sprinters’ coach at Lake Norman High School, so he coaches Brittany directly.
“It’s good, but he’s hard on me because he wants to push me harder,” Brittany said of having her father as a coach. But she admits she likes having that extra push to get better.
Since her father and her older brother ran track, Brittany has always been around the sport. Still, it isn’t her only passion.
Brittany is also a cheerleader and, for more than 11 years, she has been taking karate. Now a red belt, she expects to test for her black belt sometime next month.
In the future, Brittany sees herself going into nursing and would also like to open her own karate school and coach track, like her father, who she looks up to.
“He always gets me involved,” she said. “He doesn’t let me quit and pushes me really hard. He’s at all my games and practices.”
